Diana Hess - Civics Education

Diana Hess is the Professor Curriculum and Instruction and Dean of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is also the author of "The Political Classroom: Ethics and Evidence in Democratic Education" (2015) and "Controversy in the Classroom" (2009). She discusses those books and the importance of the Illinois Civics Mandate, which uses controversial topics, service learning and other tools as a way to incorporate civics education into the classroom. Dean Hess also discussed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education in general, and civics education in particular.
