Whether or not the authors of letters, diaries, records, and reports fully recognized it at the time, they were recording eye-witness history — creating the materials that researchers use today to study the social, political, cultural history of Illinois and the Midwest. The ALPLM holds a vast collection of such unpublished, primary sources — an estimated 12 million items — including documents generated by great leaders, such as Abraham Lincoln, as well as the written observations of everyday Illinoisans, dating from the late 18th Century through the early 21st Century.
