Tide Turns Case 7

The United States Colored Troops

Lincoln’s call for equality in voting rights for veterans of color attested to his evolving views on race.  It further demonstrates, Lincoln’s perception of their bravery as soldiers fighting in this difficult war.  The above supply list for Company C of the 51st USCT Regiment and cabinet card for veteran Nathan Hughes of Oswego, Illinois, with his wife Jane, testifies to the service of these valiant men.

The supply list of soldiers with signatures as an “X,” documents how the army kept tract of them.  Many mustered into service with an “X,” someone else would add their names later.  Black codes forbade education amongst free/enslaved peoples.  Hughes cabinet card records his serving in the 29th USCT Regiment and being shot in the left leg and hip at the Battle of the Crater.  After convalescing, he rejoins the regiment and is present at Lee’s surrender.
