Lincoln wrote to his best friend Joshua Speed in 1842 to describe his recent scrape with a political antagonist and the resulting dule. Fortunately their broadswords were quieted at the last moment by their seconds, thought 2 other dule challenges resulted in the same week. All this helped precipitate Lincoln’s sudden marriage to Mary Todd 30 days later.

Acquired in 1952
