Through a document exploration of the Farewell Address, build knowledge and strategies to teach about the enduring commitment to both independence and union that have shaped the United States since its founding. George Washington’s choices in governing and guidance at retirement illustrate how vital the union was to sustain independence.  His guidance has stayed relevant throughout our nation’s history and today and is an ideal way to explore the inherent challenges and beautiful gifts of a self-governing republic.
