ABOUT THE BAND: The Springfield Municipal Band was formed in 1933 by merging the previous Capital City Band and Illinois Watch Company Band whose roots trace back to the 1870's. In 1936, during the Great Depression, the City of Springfield passed by referendum to fund the band and we have been providing free concerts to the public ever since.
The band has regular Tuesday night concerts at Duncan Park, Wednesday after performances at Edwards Place, many Saturday mornings are spent with our friends at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. We also have yearly performances at Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the 4th of July, and at the State Fair in August.
The band's director, Tom Philbrick, is responsible for selecting music and conducting our concerts that include a variety of music from overtures, ballads, medleys, marches, and popular music.
