History Happy Hour: The Most Important Man You've Probably Never Heard Of

July 17th, 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm

Stop by the Gin Mill & Lounge on South 5th Street after work on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 5:30pm to grab a drink and hear an engaging story from Jeff Nevins, ALPLM's Technical Director / Shows Systems Manager, during "History Happy Hour."

Jeff will share the story of the “Most Important Man You’ve Probably Never Heard Of” -- Shuji Nakamura, who developed one of the most important inventions of the last 50 years. His blue LED enabled the creation of everything from LED TVs, to LEDs for residential and commercial lighting, and even the now-ubiquitous smart phone. But the story of his invention is more than just chemistry, physics, and atomic theory – it’s the story of a man who was either too dumb, too smart, or just too stubborn to know when to quit. Because of his dogged determination our world will never be the same.

History Happy Hour is a partnership program between the Illinois State Museum and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
