Tales from the Vault: The State of Sound

May 4th, 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

As the ALPLM opens our special State of Sound: A World of Music from Illinois exhibit at Chicago's Navy Pier, our spring edition of Tales from the Vault will focus on music in Illinois from the Lincoln-era.

The mid-19th century was a period of remarkable economic development in the United States. Among the industries that emerged during that time was American music, and Illinois became one of its focal points. Join Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum Lincoln Historian Christian McWhirter as he shares the stories behind objects in the collection related to the production and performance of popular music in Illinois.

This will be a “hybrid” event with the opportunity to attend in-person or virtually. The program will take place in our library’s multi-purpose room on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at 12pm. The event is free; reservations are not required.

To watch virtually via Facebook Live, please go to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum Facebook page. Open the page at the appointed time and scroll to the post highlighting the live event. Once you’re there, simply click on the image and watch the live video stream.

Tales from the Vault is a quarterly collaboration between the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and the Illinois State Museum.
