The 1850s were a period of crisis in the United States, as the public debate over slavery permeated all aspects of American political, social, and cultural life. It was in the midst of this crisis that Abraham Lincoln rose from being a political force in Illinois to one of the most important politicians and political thinkers in the nation. Join ALPLM Lincoln Historian Christian McWhirter for a discussion of how Lincoln navigated the sectional crisis of the 1850s and the steps that took him from Springfield to the White House, including the Lincoln-Douglas Debates.
