“You and those of your age are to take charge of this country when we older ones shall have gone …” - A. Lincoln
Throughout his struggles, Abraham Lincoln held fast to the goal of preserving America for generations yet to come. He saw children as the ones who would ultimately guide the nation to a brighter future. In that spirit, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is developing a major new exhibit dedicated to producing the citizens of tomorrow.
“Citizen City” is inspired by the idea that citizenship is an action, one that requires all of us, even the youngest, to contribute to helping one another. It will offer a non-partisan, inclusive vision of what it means to be part of a nation, state or community.
This innovative, inspirational feature will be the first major change to the museum’s core exhibit since it opened 20 years ago. We invite you to come along with us as we journey toward opening late this year.
Important Lessons
Visitors to Citizen City will learn by doing and playing. Children ages 3-9 will be able to hunt for Abraham Lincoln’s missing cat, Tabby. They can hop in a taxi that will show them highlights of the city, its institutions, and the people who live there. They will help neighbors, harvest vegetables, run the city’s power grid, talk to President Lincoln, and more.
