Hero’s Head

1956

Welded steel

Hunt completed Hero’s Head in the basement of his father’s barbershop, less than a year
after the killing of Emmett Till in Money, Mississippi. Welded from scrap metal, Hero’s Head is an unflinching portrait of American racism, a memorialization of Hunt’s childhood neighbor, and a monument to a victim of anti-Black violence.
