Lincoln the Lawyer – During the course of his twenty-plus-year legal career, Lincoln was involved in more than 5,600 cases, including ones argued before both the Illinois Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court. Though many today assume he was primarily a commercial lawyer—given that some of his most famous cases were related to large corporations—he was certainly not above helping in private matters, including securing a divorce and alimony for a battered woman. In his career, Lincoln had three different law partners: John Todd Stuart, Stephen T. Logan, and William H. Herndon. Throughout all three partnerships, Lincoln’s knowledge of the law and skills as an attorney grew as he became more immersed in the field and expanded his law library with the purchase of new books. Traveling the Eighth Judicial Circuit, Lincoln covered fourteen counties and ten thousand square miles.
