Tales from the Vault -- Vault the Vote: The History of U.S. Elections

September 1st, 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

This November, Americans will once again head to the polls to choose their representatives. Join ALPLM Illinois and Midwest Studies Research Historian Jacob Friefeld for the next Tales from the Vault on Thursday, September 1 at Noon as he discusses the history of political campaigns and elections and shares objects from the collection that help tell the story of Lincoln’s political career as well as the careers of other prominent Illinoisans in politics.

Among the items you’ll see and learn about are an 1832 Poll Book in which Lincoln recorded votes, a Poll book from Lincoln’s 1846 election to congress, an 1864 Lincoln-Johnson campaign banner, various Adlai Stevenson campaign promotional items, and the boots Dan Walker wore to walk across the state during his 1970s gubernatorial campaign.

This will be a “hybrid” event with the opportunity to attend in-person or virtually. The program will take place in our library’s multi-purpose room on Thursday, September 1 at 12pm. The event is free; reservations are not required.

To watch virtually via Facebook Live, please go to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum Facebook page. Open the page at the appointed time and scroll to the post highlighting the live event. Once you’re there, simply click on the image and watch the live video stream.

Tales from the Vault is a monthly collaboration between the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the Illinois State Museum, and the Lincoln Home National Historic Site.
