History Happy Hour: Hiss, Clang, Kerplop: A Cacophony of Sounds from the ALPLM Stacks

May 15th, 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm

Stop by the Gin Mill & Lounge on South 5th Street in downtown Springfield after work on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at 5:30pm to grab a drink and hear an engaging story from Jade Kastel, ALPLM's Director of Library Services during "History Happy Hour."

Sounds spark memories, signal warnings and alerts, evoke emotions, and they can serve as soundtracks for eras and periods of time. This History Happy Hour runs the gamut of sound from nature with hoots from barred owls, a barking deer, a hound dog’s bay, and sounds from the Anthropocene including music, trains, and soundscapes that one associates with humans in city and rural life. This talk will have all the bells and whistles, pun intended, as we listen intently to sound across decades.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Jade Kastel is the Director of Library Services at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, and she is uniquely positioned to take the audience on an auditory excursion. Jade was a Director of Music in Milwaukee for 9 years before she embarked on her career in librarianship. She is currently completing her doctorate in jazz performance with a minor in queer studies at the University of Illinois Urbana – Champaign.

History Happy Hour is a partnership program between the Illinois State Museum and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
